Introducing the ToolBook 9 Book Explorer
By Jianli Zhou
Bio
Jianli has been doing ToolBook technical support for 4 years. In addition to answering customer's ToolBook questions and troubleshooting problems, she also creates Developer Exchange Tools and writes ToolBook Knowledge Base articles. She also specializes in Aspen LCMS templates and Template Editor, and has 6 years experience in custom content development using ToolBook, HTML/JavaScript/ASP/Database, Director, etc.

In Instructor 2004, when you click the View menu, then move the mouse to Browsers, you will see four browsers: Property, Handler, Object, and Page as shown here.

In ToolBook 9.0, when you click the View menu, and move the mouse to Browsers, you will see only two browsers: Property and Handler.

Where are the Page and Object browsers? They have been removed from ToolBook to be replaced by the new Book Explorer.

To open the Book Explorer, you can click Book Explorer from the View menu or press Shift+F4 keys, or click the Book Explorer on the tool bar.

The Book Explorer looks like this:

You can do many things within the Book Explorer including:

  • Access the right-click menus of a page, an object, or a background by right-clicking one of them in the Book Explorer
  • Re-order the pages in the book or objects on a page by dragging and dropping a page or an object in the Book Explorer
  • Move an object from one page to another or move a page from one background to another by dragging and dropping it in the Book Explorer
  • Copy an object from one page to another page
  • Delete pages or objects
  • View a page thumbnail by moving the mouse over the page in the Book Explorer

You can specify how the different types of objects are displayed in the Book Explorer by going to View menu Options, then clicking Book Explorer tab.

Currently dozens of tools are provided by SumTotal Systems and are accessible through the Tools | LiveXtensions menu. You'll notice there are three tabs in the LiveXtensions.

  • LiveXtensions
This is a list of tools which are available only to customers with a current Technical Support subscription. To access this list you must first enter your Support ID Number. Once the number is validated the list of tools will be revealed for your future use. As ToolBook 9 ships, there are 7 tools in this list, but more will be created and added, so check back often to see what new tools have been created. To see a list of tools currently available,

  • Devex
This is a list of tools which were made available within ToolBook 2004 as Developers Exchange Tools. These tools are still available to all ToolBook users.

  • Imported Tools
If you create your own tool, or acquire a tool written by a third party, you can import the tool into the LiveXtensions and it will show up on this tab.
