MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA (February 16, 2005) - SumTotal Systems (NASDAQ: SUMT), the largest provider of learning and business performance technologies, services and processes, today announced that it has expanded its senior management team by appointing R&D veteran Bill Medved as its new senior vice president of engineering, the company’s top technical post. In his new position, Medved will join the SumTotal executive staff and will be responsible for all global R&D initiatives.
Medved has an extensive background in technology innovation and execution, overseeing the development and deployment of a wide variety of internationally distributed enterprise applications. Prior to joining SumTotal, Medved was vice president of engineering for PlaceWare (now Microsoft Office Live Meeting), where he was responsible for new development, maintenance and support of Placeware’s hosted real-time web conferencing solution for more than 3,000 customers. At Placeware, Medved led several significant efforts to improve the development process, ultimately shortening product delivery cycles by 30%. Medved also was the executive technology sponsor for the innovative Microsoft Windows-based meeting console, a key component in Microsoft’s eventual acquisition of PlaceWare.
Prior to Placeware, Medved held engineering leadership positions at global companies including McAfee, where he drove initiatives to improve IT management, quality assurance and program predictability; Rockwell Automation, where he developed the company’s first Windows-based interface application and built the first successful Q/A team for Windows-based products; and Corning, where he started his career as a lead software engineer and was responsible for designing and innovating software systems to support scientific research.
As founder of a successful consulting business, Medved also has significant experience as a high-level technical strategist and counselor to organizations needing systems architecture and application development assistance, including employee payroll and systems giant ADP.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to grow and manage the considerable talent in SumTotal’s R&D teams and to continue to add to SumTotal’s long history of product innovation,” said Medved. “I look forward to building on the strong foundation of the SumTotal Enterprise Suite, introducing new products that serve both the immediate and future needs of our customers, and continuing to help drive SumTotal’s leadership in the learning and business performance marketplace.”
“Bill has a proven track record of successfully managing productive, international R&D teams and innovating new technologies to effectively solve real-world business problems for his customers,” said Andy Eckert, SumTotal CEO. “His ability to analyze an organization’s most critical objectives and to bring the right solutions to bear on those business goals, directly aligns with SumTotal’s fundamental value proposition and makes Bill an outstanding addition to our executive team.”
