SumTotal Systems Launches ToolBook Assistant 2004 and Ships ToolBook Instructor 2004 Update

Feature enhancements to award-winning product line lower cost of ownership, boost usability and increase effectiveness in delivering learning experiences to impact bottom-line business results

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA (June 2, 2004) – SumTotal Systems (NASDAQ: SUMT), the industry’s largest provider of learning and business performance technologies, services and processes, today announced the immediate availability of ToolBook Assistant 2004, the newest version of its award-winning learning content and assessment authoring tool, and an update to ToolBook Instructor 2004, the industry’s most robust authoring solution for simulations and interactive content. Continuing its commitment to this popular product line, SumTotal has added powerful new features and enhancements to both products, developed to meet evolving learning industry demands and to respond to feedback from many of the hundreds of thousands of ToolBook users worldwide.

ToolBook Assistant 2004 allows non-technical users with little or no programming background to create and deliver high-quality, Web-based content quickly, easily and economically. SumTotal added new features and usability enhancements designed to reduce time and cost of content development and to accelerate organizational productivity with faster, more compelling content delivery.

“As e-learning becomes more accepted and integrated into daily corporate lives, business units are wanting to deploy massive amounts of content, rapidly and at a reasonable cost,” said Elliott Masie, renown learning industry expert and founder of the Masie Center. “This demand level cannot always be met with traditional full blown instructional design and coding.”

According to Masie, organizations are turning to tools and methods that allow them to:

  • Build a sound instructional template and then have subject matter experts populate the content using word processors and other simple tools.
  • Deploy drag and drop authoring tools, also using templates that allow for rapid creation of learning objects.
  • Leverage internal processes that are linked directly to document management, so that content can be authored once and deployed for both learning and performance support.

ToolBook Assistant has always been based on a unique, drag-and-drop authoring model, with a wide variety of testing and assessment options, wizards and ready-made templates designed to meet specific learning needs of business, government or educational organizations. ToolBook Assistant 2004 augments these capabilities by enabling:
  • Easier content creation with more feedback and instruction options for building into learning content
  • Increased authoring speed and flexibility from cross-compatibility with ToolBook Instructor, allowing use of ToolBook Instructor to create or enhance ToolBook Assistant content or developing tools
  • Improved end-user productivity with support for more Web browsers, including the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape

Organizations can deploy ToolBook Assistant 2004 content through any standards compliant platform, including the SumTotal Enterprise Suite, and can easily upgrade to the more comprehensive capabilities of ToolBook Instructor as their content needs change.

“Our customers have told us that improved business performance relies on more rapid distribution of critical knowledge, certification testing and other learning experiences across their extended enterprises, and that requires content authors and instructional designers to work more quickly and resourcefully then ever before,” said Brad Crain, SumTotal’s VP ToolBook. “The additions we’ve made to both ToolBook Instructor and ToolBook Assistant grew directly out of that need and other real-world business needs we identify from ongoing dialog with thousands of ToolBook users. ToolBook will continue to be a dynamic, customer-driven solution, nimble enough and scalable enough to adapt to the ever-changing industry environments and business strategies of our customers around the globe.”

Updates to ToolBook Instructor 2004 reflect SumTotal’s focus on improving usability and increasing the product’s ability to impact business performance across the organization. New simulation enhancements and significant performance improvements make this version even more powerful for authoring effective software application simulations, assessments, and interactive content. With stronger software simulation development functionality and improving the simulation recording process, ToolBook increases authoring flexibility and end-user productivity, allowing organizations to become more rapidly proficient, compliant and productive.
Enhanced capabilities in the ToolBook Instructor 2004 update include:
  • Additional assessment and response options for more accurate tracking and reporting of user proficiency with content
  • More versatility in deploying simulations to ensure faster productivity on mission-critical software applications
  • Faster simulation recording, enabling more rapid delivery of effective software application training simulations
  • New support for recording DOS and Mainframe software applications, allowing organizations to deliver a broader range of software application training
